All we have in defence is the word of a politician, who will not even be the man who chooses how it is used.

It's just about possible that they don't even mean this to be as malevolent as it is. In which case the government is merrily tripping along into a police state, instead of being deliberately leading us into one.
Incidentally, were you just searching for posts about this, or did somebody point you here?
