Latymer used to have a great reputation (it probably still does, I just don't live in Hackney anymore) ...

... being Catholic my family chose a Catholic school ... so I got on the train every morning at Hackney Downs, and for two years went out to Enfield Town to get the bus to the St.Ignatius College (lower school) ... then we moved to America, and when we moved back, I took the train every morning for three years to Turkey Street (about as far away) to go to St.Ignatius College (upper school).

My middle brother tried that for a while, but then transferred to Cardinal Pole in Hackney to be with his local friends. My youngest brother decided to just go to Cardinal Pole and not try out St.Ignatius.

I know that I was happy with my education, but I'm the only one of the three of us to go to university.

I think that the concept of equality is a great thing, but that we do have to accept that everyone is equal, but everyone has their own talents, and so picking a school that has a strong vocational curriculum is good for some children, for others it might be a strong sports programme or strong arts programme, and for others its a curriculum that allows them to excel in academic pursuits (where the school and students actively support the idea it's ok to be bright and to achieve intellectually) ... and so I support a diversity of schools, including those labelled grammar and secondary modern. The best education is one that is tailored to your child and gives her/him the best foundation for achieving whatever they want to achieve in life.

So if it's Latymer he wants, then good for him and good for you for supporting him in that.

At least that's my biased, single male no kids, view :-)

Thanks. Yes, Latymer still has a good rep. It sends the most people to Oxbridge of any non-private school, or something (for what that's worth). Anyway, it's moot: see my reply to [livejournal.com profile] ladymoonray, above.
