Does anyone know how much a carpenter should cost?

We've just had a quote from a carpenter to build fitted cupboards and shelves into two chimney-breast alcoves. He's asking around £1100 for the pair. This seems on the expensive side to us, but maybe it's not. Anyone have any recent experience of London (or elsewhere) carpenter-pricing?
